The Davis High varsity women's soccer team put up a fight against the number one team in the league: Del Oro High School.
This past Thursday at 5:30, the team stepped onto the field for more than just a game. Before they could start the competitive match up, they celebrated the team’s 6 seniors—Aubrey McLin, Jordan Meade, Caitlyn Garcia, Izzy Churchward, Isabella Hazel and Madison Lujan.
Del Oro started with the ball, and Davis showcased their strong defense which was proactive throughout the night. The team’s starting goalkeeper, McLin, kept the team in the game with many great saves in the first half.
Although Davis made many attempts to score, such as sophomore Natalia Barker having a close header, they had difficulty in putting the ball in the net.
Unfortunately on one of the attacks from Del Oro, Davis committed a hand ball in the box. This granted Del Oro a penalty kick, and they went up on Davis 0-1.
Despite the significant attempts from Madison Lujan and the offense, Del Oro was faster to score. At the beginning of the second half, the Golden Eagles scored goal number two, and later added on another to extend their lead to 0-3.
Davis still kept fighting and eventually a foul was called on Del Oro in the box. This foul gave Churchward a penalty kick to bring the score to 1-3.
Davis ended the game with one last corner, and junior Chloe Ehlers said that the “strategy going into the final minutes was to push people up and try to get the ball in the back of the net.”
