The Davis High women’s varsity basketball team lost against the undefeated Oak Ridge High 59-46 on Jan. 30.
The first quarter started off slow for Davis as Oak Ridge was able to apply heavy defensive pressure and quick offense. “The start of the game definitely caught us off guard a little bit being down that much that quickly, so that's a lot to come back from,” head coach Heather Highshoe said.
Davis continued to stay competitive despite the quick pace, leaving Oak Ridge to score only nine points this quarter compared to the 20 points they had in the first quarter. “As a team we need to work harder on our transition defense,” sophomore Elliot Schapira said.
The Blue Devils would then head to half time down 29-13 with sophomore Lorelei Nachman scoring three points, and senior Riley MacDonald scoring four points in the second quarter.
The team persevered on both ends of the floor in quarter three. Scoring 18 points, Davis was refusing to let the game get out of reach. “I think we came back from being down 15 in the 1st quarter really well,” Nachman said.
Davis tightened up their defense in quarter four to secure more rebounds and capitalize the scoring opportunities they had. Several layups helped bring the score closer, but the comeback fell short as the game ended in favor of Oak Ridge. “We responded really positively and came out and made a run,” Nachman siad.
Although Davis lost, they were able to bring up the intensity in the last quarter and not let the score slow them down. “They just kept fighting every quarter, even though we were down, and I liked seeing that resiliency in them,” Highshoe said.
