Davis High women's flag football players ran to each other in shouts of celebration, erupting in cheers with their arms in the air and flags blowing at their waists. This was the scene after Daniela Cabrera-Carrasquilla secured her first defensive interception and ran it all the way back to the endzone for a touchdown–the first one of the game.
On Thursday, Sept. 25, the DHS flag football team dominated over the Folsom Bulldogs in a 40-6 victory.
Both teams came into the matchup hunting for their first league win, but Davis came out with intensity and never looked back.
Despite the fact that Davis’ offense had been struggling in their previous league matchups, Folsom proved to be no issue for them. Senior Sonia Clayton spearheaded the offensive efforts with two touchdowns on throws from sophomore quarterback Arisa Mendricks. Mendricks and junior Lily Schneider added on to the offensive scoring with one touchdown each.
The team’s success didn’t stop at offense. Defense came out with the same much needed intensity, despite missing their starting safety, junior Holly Nichols.
Cabrera-Carasquilla’s first interception wasn’t enough, and she went on to secure another, evading Folsom defenders and nearly making it to the endzone for a second time. Senior Ariana Lopez joined the party with another pick-six herself.
Along with their dazzling interceptions, defense also put on a show with their flag pulling. Clayton, Lopez, senior Mehr Lamba, and junior Suzette Cruz executed diving flag pulls to thwart Folsom’s offensive efforts.
Davis moves on to a record of 1-5 in league and 2-7 on the season, while Folsom remains on the hunt for their first win.
