Blue tinsel pom-poms waved through the crowd as Davis High friends and family cheered on the women’s water polo team in the new aquatic center on campus.
“[The new aquatic center is] a really amazing upgrade from our practice pool. Our coach has really practiced with our endurance and has trained us with this course for our upcoming tournaments and games, " said junior Aiva Mann.
The Davis High women’s water polo team faced off against Granite Bay in the season opener on Sept. 15.
Davis came out with intensity from the start, and they were quick to get past the Granite Bay defense and put the ball in the back of the net.
They drove the first half, and held Granite Bay to only three goals that half.
Junior Hazel Beatty exhibited strong saves to prevent Granite Bay from securing any momentum throughout the game, and she finished the games with an impressive total of 11 saves.
At halftime, the Blue Devils led with a score of 9-3, and they never looked back.
In the second half, Davis kept the same energy with crisp passes and sharp goals to evade the Granite Bay goalkeeper.
Despite losing to the Grizzlies last year in a tight match of the Sac-Joaquin section finals, Davis got their redemption, winning with a crushing final score of 15-8.
The decisive win was key in the team’s first league game against their rival opponents.
The win reflected the team’s cohesiveness. Junior Aiva Mann led with 4 goals, followed by four other blue devils scoring 2 goals each.
“After our big upset in the section championship where we lost by [3], it was really good to just come out here and beat them good, " said junior Addie Sinclair.
